  • Course Description
    Focuses on male sexual and reproductive health across the lifespan and explores the meaning of masculinity and the impact of masculine beliefs on males’ sexual and reproductive health and healthcare use. Students critique the literature and explore methods to design interventions working within a masculinity framework to improve males’ sexual and reproductive health outcomes.

    2 Credits: Students will take turns leading a dicussion. In addition, students will be evaluated on their preparation and participation in class dicussions.

    The structure of the course is predominantly a reading seminar format. As such, we expect every student to come prepared each week having read the required readings AND participate in class discussion. In addition, each student will present in teams of 2 to the class in the latter half of the term.

    You can take this course for 2 credits or 3 credits (if you write a paper due at the end of the term).

    The syllabus is very similar to last year's class but we have made updates to readings and assignments based on course feedback. Please refer to course topic section below for outline of class sessions and goals. Readings will be uploaded in the next few weeks. A more detailed syllabus will also be uploaded in the next few weeks.

    PLEASE NOTE: There are 3 READINGS we expect all students be prepared to discuss for Class 1.

    Overview Class Syllabus

    CLASS 1 – Overview Male Reproductive Health

    ·   To gain a better understanding of sexual and reproductive health for young men from a domestic and international perspective

    CLASS 2 – Masculinities & Sexuality: What does it mean to be a man & how this is related to men’s health

    ·    To learn about masculinity theory & how masculinity influences men’s health, health care use, & relationships with women

    ·    To learn about male sexuality including sexual identity development including theories on sexual orientation development

    CLASS 3 – Male Reproductive Health Across the Lifespan

    ·    To learn about male reproductive health across the lifespan

    CLASS 4 – Community-based interventions

     ·   To learn about community-based intervention studies on male reproductive health

    CLASS 5 – Clinical interventions: health seeking & care delivery

     ·   To learn about clinic-based intervention studies on male reproductive health

    CLASS 6 – Class Presentations

     ·   To learn about student-generated topics of interest related to male reproductive health

     Can use this as an opportunity to learn how to:

    ·   Communicate to a policy audience complexity of addressing male reproductive health issues

    ·   Critique published research study on male reproductive health 

    ·    Present a proposal for work on a male reproductive health-related topic

    • To understand training needs for the nation so that health professionals are prepared to address the population’s SRH, particularly men?
