THE TOOLS OF PUBLIC HEALTH PRACTICE AND DECISION MAKING Syllabus
Course Learning Objectives
This course will prepare you to be able to do the following:
- Identify the core functions of public health and their application in public health practice
- Identify the steps in the public health problem solving approach
- Apply the core competencies for public health professions as developed by the ASPH and Council on Linkages between Academia and Public Health Practice
- Conduct a self assesment to determine personal strengths and weaknesses, and goals for competency development
- Identify the qualities (positive and negative) of leaders within the public health practice setting
- Apply the problem solving approach and core competencies to reach decisions to address real world public health problems
- Identify the challenges of communication in public health practice and develop strategies for addressing multiple audiences
- Identify the role of the media in public health communication and be equiped to craft a message for the media
- Review the importance of surveillance and public health indicators in the practice setting
- Identify the importance of social, economic, and political drivers in the developement of public health strategies
- Develop a plan for building a toolbox of competencies
Course DescriptionIntroduces the core functions of public health and the core competencies for public health professionals. Students assess their strengths and academic goals while building their toolbox of public health competencies. Presents competencies which are illustrated though case studies, and students interactively make decisions. Cases include management and personnel decision making, cultural sensitivity, communicating with the media, outbreak and emergency response. Presents elements of the public health problem solving approach and integrates them into the case examples. Familiarizes students with the core competencies and encourages development through courses and the public health practicum.

Methods of AssessmentClass participation and social media involvement (10%), interactive case studies and submission of short assignments (40%) and final exam (50%)
Additional Faculty Notes:
There is no required textbook for this course. Reading assignments are listed in the lecture schedule and will be posted in the course library. Readings are selected to present the competencies and methods used in public health decision-making, with additional readings and press stories specific to the case studies. Students are expected to complete the required readings prior to the session(s) for which they are listed.
