  • Course Learning Objectives

    Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:

    • Define what quality means from the standpoint of a variety of stakeholders
    • identify the root cause of quality problems
    • Apply the problem solving cycle to quality shortfalls identified
    • Explain the relationship of costs to quality
    • develop a monitoring approach to track the quality of health services
  • Course Description

    This course presents the principles and practice of total quality management methods for health systems in developing countries. It places an emphasis on integrated district-level health systems management and fostering a genuine team approach in the face of an authoritarian tradition.  It also addresses the central importance of community governance and implementing interventions according to standards and in an equitable fashion. It will also review how to introduce a measurement-based approach to problem solving, emphasizing analysis of service delivery processes and outcomes as well as developing operational research as an integral component of the management system.

    Quality Assurance Management Methods for Developing Countries provides a thorough grounding in the principles and practice of quality assurance management for those who have or will have responsibility for health systems in developing countries. Through informal discussion, exercises to develop competencies in selected quality assurance methods, and a series of case studies, participants will work through a systematic process for closing the gap between what should be accomplished with presently available resources and what actually takes place with health care efforts in most of the developing world.

    Student evaluation based on analysis and presentation of case studies.

    Assignment 1: Applying QA Tools = 10%

    Assignment 2: Case Study Critiques = 10%

    Quiz (3), attendance, participation = 30%

    Final Presentation Project / Storyboard = 50%

  • Course Objectives

    After completing this course, you should be able to do the following:

    1. Recognize major challenges to successful implementation of quality assurance management approach, which is new for health systems in developing countries
    2. Explain the importance of a genuine team approach in the face of generally authoritarian tradition
    3. Facilitate recognition of the entire community as the "customer" requiring an active participatory approach Introduce measurement-based methods for problem identification and solving with an emphasis on process indicators for rapid feedback and corrective action
    4. Develop a familiarity with operational research that serves as an integral part of the management system Select a case study for a group presentation for evaluation based on analysis
